Welcome to The Shepherd Center web site!

The Shepherd Center is a local agency that exists to provide compassion, basic support, and hope to those in our community who need it most. We focus on families, the elderly, the homeless, and others in need. Listening to our clients and caring about their welfare is our most important product. Our services include but are not limited to:
  • Feeding the hungry
  • Clothing the poor
  • Empowering the needy to seek independence
  • Providing social and legal support
  • Basic eye and blood pressure clinic
You are invited to tour our site to find out more about The Shepherd Center. In 1974 The Shepherd Center began when a few volunteers collectively decided to provide food, clothing, and compassion to those in need in the immediate area. In recent years, because of the support of our financial donors and volunteers, we are now one of the largest, most comprehensive services of its kind in north Pinellas county from Dunedin to Tarpon Springs including Oldsmar.

In May of 2010 The Shepherd Center received The Community Service and Leadership Award from The Pinellas County Coalition for the Homeless. See the article in the St. Petersburg Times.

Periodically, Open House events are scheduled at The Shepherd Center. Community officials and the general public are invited to tour The Center and enjoy a close-up view of what the Shepherd Center does on a daily basis.  Watch this web site for the next scheduled event.

The Spirit of Christmas Delivered by two local children
____________________________________
It had been a long, busy day at The Shepherd Center on this December day. Then, things changed. Jered & George walked in with their mothers and made all the difference.

These two little boys in the second and third grade at Sunset Hills Elementary School came to deliver the fruits of their chosen school project. They wanted to find a way to help those in need in their community. They decided to purchase (with their moms' help) mugs, fill them with candy, and sell them to local businesses. All the proceeds would be given to The Shepherd Center to help them help others. Pictured above are Jered & George presenting a check for $150 to Ron Haddad, Shepherd Center board member. Gail Gendrau, (rear right) is The Center's development director. They proudly display their thank-you letters from The Center. Merry Christmas, indeed! Isn't that what it is all about?

Each Fall and Spring there are major fundraisers to help meet the needs of The Shepherd Center clients. During the Fall, a gala dinner/dance/auction is held at a large facility in Tarpon Springs. In the Spring The 4 Hearts non-profit fundraising organization hosts a golf tournament with the proceeds going to The Shepherd Center as well as other local charities.

In May of this year The Shepherd Center and Palm Harbor United Methodist Church worked together to sponsor a Fashion Show at Palm Harbor United Methodist Church. Clothes from The Center Thrift Store were used by the models from the church. Over 200 women and their daughters attended this event. Several ladies bought their outfits and the proceeds went to help support The Shepherd Center. To view pictures from the show click here

Bags, bags, bags as far as you can see!

Thanks to our generous community donors The Shepherd Center was, once again, able to give away 600 Thanksgiving dinners to those who would otherwise have no dinner.

On November 19, 2012, in excess of 50 volunteers from our community appeared at Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral Hall to help pack these bags and distribute them to those in need. Pre qualified recipients began lining up outside the church at 7 a.m. in anticipation of one of the two best meals they would have all year. The Shepherd Center goes through this process again at Christmas time.
